![]() ![]() That being said, Rateliff never fails to turn in a vocal take that is anything less than compelling. The pace of “So Put Out” embodies its title a bit too well, and “Something Ain’t Right” similarly suffers from a slow stride with little substance. The doo-wop homage “Oh, I” wears thin after three-and-a-half minutes, and yearns for a runtime more reminiscent of the original format. Not every risk pays off, though, and too many tracks sound like a genre exploration that came up fruitless. “Love Don’t” is a bombastic closer that delightfully goes off the rails as the band leaves it all out there. “Love Me Till I’m Gone” fits comfortably in the Stax pantheon with its fluttery, dream-soaked melody and a stirring vocal performance by Rateliff, who channels Van Morrison’s freeform yowls in the song’s closing moments. With each album, the band reliably delivers at least one or two songs that sound like unearthed compositions from their label, the legendary Memphis-based Stax Records they make no exception here, despite their current futuristic focus. ![]()
